FAQs for Dr. Brent Furnish

QUESTION: What is the difference between HEALTH CARE & SICK CARE?

ANSWER:  First, think about this. In the United States, we do not have a “Health Care System” as it is so called.  In actuality, we have a “Sick Care System”. Sickness is when the person seeking the help of a Chiropractor or Medical Physician has SYMPTOMS.

Secondly, there are mild, moderate, and severe degrees of UNHEALTHNESS that can be detected with early screenings. Examples of such screenings would be going to the Dentist for a check-up 2-3 times per year. Also, having a fall and Balance screening by Dr. Furnish. A screening will determine underlying neurological malfunctions prior to the patient losing balance and falling.

Once the person has lost balance and fallen, then he is “SICK”.  If faulty neurological signs are detected on the screening examination, which could lead to the person falling in the future.  In this case, that person would have a degree of ‘UNHEALTHNESS”. Obviously, it is easier to keep health and costs less in time and money than to overcome sickness.

QUESTION: What does a Chiropractor Concentrating on Functional Neurology do?

ANSWER: Chiropractors who have returned to school for an additional 3 years, after graduating from basic Chiropractic school.  These Chiropractors are highly trained and concentrate their practices on brain-based neurological rehabilitation. This is taught through an accredited CCE post-doctorate Chiropractic College.  They serve their community’s patients, as well as provide extended evaluations and consultations to other physicians and health care practitioners. They have continued with STATE OF THE ART post-doctorate training thru a CCE-accredited college (such as Logan College). This enables them to provide all the standard Chiropractic services and, the “Brain-Based” services their state-of-the-art neurological training allows.

QUESTION:  How does this differ from a Medical Neurologist?

ANSWER: They differ greatly in their methods of treatment.  The medical neurologist will prescribe medications or injections.  The neurosurgeon uses surgery to attempt to correct a condition. The Chiropractic Neurologist treatment is medication-free, and nonsurgical treatment methods.  There is little risk with Functional Neurological rehabilitation and you will know in a short time if the treatment will be beneficial for your condition.

QUESTION: What type of treatment do Chiropractors Concentrate on Functional Neurology use?

  1. Eye exercises
  2. Balance and coordination activities
  3. Cognitive and memory function exercises and activities
  4. Sensory training that may include light, sound, smell, or touch
  5. Physical exercise
  6. Breathing exercises
  7. Neurofeedback treatments and exercises
  8. Nutritional modification
  9. And many others.

QUESTION: What makes a Chiropractor Concentrating on Functional Neurology so different?

ANSWER: Chiropractic Neurologists with this specifictraining OFTEN have great success evaluating and treating patients for whom other traditional Chiropractic or Medical evaluation and treatment methods have failed.

The distinguishing factor is the paradigm, or approach that a Chiropractic Neurologist uses toward diagnosis and treatment. In addition to training for neurological pathologies, a Chiropractic Neurologist with state-of-the-art neurological training evaluates for SUBTLE CHANGES in the function of the patients’ nervous system.  It is this factor of assessment in neurological function, which sets a Chiropractic Neurologist apart from other Doctors and health care practitioners. If there is a neurological presentation that cannot be addressed with Dr. Furnish’s training, he will be more than glad to refer you to the appropriate physician.

QUESTION: How long will it take to become healthy and /or feel better?

ANSWER:  This is actually two questions. Feeling better does not necessarily mean being healthy, although it is important.   Let me give you an example: if you went to the Dentist with an abscessed, very painful tooth and the Dentist gave you a shot of Novocain. The pain went away, but he did nothing more to the tooth. Would you be well and healthy because the pain is gone? ABSOLUTELY NOT.  The absence of the symptom does not necessarily mean well and/or healthy.  Everyone will respond differently to care and the amount of time a person improves or becomes healthy or less sick will vary.  The initial comprehensive functional neurological examination will help give Dr. Furnish an idea of how much time is required for maximum improvement in brain and nervous system function.

QUESTION: Dr. Furnish, what excites you most about your practice?

ANSWER: “Each day, in practice I come across patients who have suffered needlessly for many months or years. These patients have conditions that have not responded to the traditional treatment or therapies they have received in the past.  They have almost given up hope in living some form of a normal quality of life. To be able to change that situation for a patient, give them hope and restore function and quality to their life, then see them SMILE & LAUGH again is the greatest pleasure one could receive.”  But what really excites me most is when people come into the office and are evaluated before they have these terrible symptoms and we improve their brain, spine, and nervous system function so they never have to experience these hardships
